Description   Hairy Vetch : A vigorous and nitrogen producing plant that is great for tilling in before planting the spring garden crops. Stems may grow 2 to 5 feet long and leaves are composed of 10 to 20 leaflets. Flower are violet and white to rose colored or white. Seed are round and black, developing inside elongated and flattened pods. Hairy vetch provides a natural source of nitrogen for organically grown crops and also acts as a host plant for beneficial insects. Hairy vetch does best on sandy or sandy loam soil and is shade tolerant. Hairy vetch is useful as forage, hay, silage, green manure, and in cover crops and in food plots for wildlife. This annual when used in wildlife food polts is particularly good for deer and turkey but can be used for other wildlife.
