Thyme Mother of (Creeping) : ' Thymus serphyllum ' This perennial thyme grows about 3" to 6" tall. Often planted between the stones or bricks in garden paths for its beauty and sweet aroma. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires little to moderate amounts of water. Prefers well drained soil.
Culinary Uses : Either fresh or dried, thyme leaves are used for flavoring soups, gravies, stews, sauces, sausages, dressings and many other dishes.
Medicinal Uses : Thymol, a primary component of thyme oil is valued for its disinfecting properties, as an affective treatment for skin conditions like psoriasis and exzema, as an inhalant to treat septic sore throat from scarlet fever and ringworm. The disinfecting properties of thyme is said to be up to 12 times as powerful as carbolic acid.
Other Uses : Thymes blooms attract butterflies and many different kinds of beneficial flies and wasps. They are also a favorite of honey bees.
