Description   Rhode Island Reds Egg Color Egg Size (oz/doz) Rate of Lay Brown 25 - 26 Excellent Cross developed from a Red Malays, Brown Leghorns and Asiatic native stock and were known as Red Javas but in 1880 were first exhibited as Rhode Island Reds. Hen are large enough to be used for meat when their use as laying hens has been completed. The color of both the male and female is primarily a lustrous, rich, dark or mahogany red with a black tail. Rhode Island Reds are tough birds, good at foraging and free ranging, and are typically docile, quiet and friendly.
