Description
Hinkelhatz Pepper Plant :
Heirloom
Rare Pennsylvania Dutch heirloom dating before 1880, with pods that are covered with tiny bumps and wrinkles and measure 1 1/4 inches in length tapering to a blunt point. Peppers mature to red and are especially good for making pepper vinegars. Variety is one of the oldest preserved by this group of Mennonites, cultivated for well over 150 years. Traditionally used exclusively for pickling, the Pennsylvania Dutch cooked and pureed it to make a pepper vinegar similar to Tabasco sauce. This Hinkelhatz sauce was used on sauerkraut and other Pennsylvania Dutch dishes. Named for their pendant fruits the size and shape of chicken's hearts - which is the translation of hinkelhatz. Plants and seeds are still quite rare.
