Egyptian Walking Onion Bulbils

Egyptian Walking Onions are
vigorous and trouble-free heirloom perennial onions that are hardy in zones 3-10 and get there name by the way they walk across to ground. Instead of flowers, this onion plant produces top sets, a cluster of bulbils, at the top of the stalk where the flowers and seeds would normally be. Eventually the stalk will flop over from the weight of the bulbils and replant themselves, thus beginning their “walk” across the ground. The Egyptian Walking onions are also called tree onions or topset onions.

Planting:

Egyptian Walking onions are edible. The bulbils can be eaten raw, cooked, pickled or sliced into salads. The smaller onion blades can be used like chives. The bottom can be used but the bulb of the parent plant is tough-skinned and pungent.
